How to Sell a Car in BC: Prepare for the Sale and Transfer

Selling a car in British Columbia involves more than agreeing on a price. Prepare an accurate vehicle description, understand the offer and use ICBC’s current instructions for the ownership transfer. Keep the assessment, payment, collection and registration steps clear so you know what has been agreed and what still needs to happen.

This guide helps you organise a standard vehicle sale. If your documents, ownership or finance situation is unusual, raise that before booking a handover. For a direct buyer enquiry in Vancouver, contact Cash For Used Cars Of Vancouver on 236 239 1470.

Start with the official BC transfer checklist

For a standard sale, ICBC’s instructions cover the original signed vehicle registration and Transfer/Tax Form APV9T, completed in full with original signatures on all four pages. Remove your plates. After payment, complete and sign the transfer form as directed. ICBC recommends attending an Autoplan broker with the buyer to ensure processing and keeping appropriate documents if you cannot attend together. Arrange cancellation or transfer of insurance separately.

Read the complete ICBC selling instructions for the sequence and documents that apply. Signing paperwork and collecting the vehicle do not, on their own, prove the registration transfer has been processed.

Decide how you want to sell

Your options may include a private listing, a trade in connected with a replacement purchase or an enquiry to a direct vehicle buyer. Think about the condition of the vehicle, your available time and how you want to handle viewings and collection. There is no need to assume the same route suits every car or seller.

A private asking price is not evidence of a completed sale, and a trade in discussion may be part of a wider purchase arrangement. Compare the whole transaction. If you want to enquire directly with our Vancouver business, the selling preparation page explains what information helps start the discussion.

Prepare an accurate vehicle description

Write down the year, make, model, approximate kilometres and running condition. If you know the trim or other important specification, include it. Explain known damage, warning lights, mechanical problems and missing components. If you are unsure what is wrong, describe the symptoms instead of presenting a guess as a diagnosis.

Use service records and repair information to explain what you know. You do not need to claim that the vehicle is perfect or try to predict every future issue. A clear description gives the buyer a more useful starting point and helps you identify questions that need answering before you agree on a sale.

Understand the amount being discussed

Ask whether a number is an initial estimate, an offer subject to stated checks or a final agreed amount. Clarify the vehicle included, what information the assessment relies on and how long the amount remains available. If the vehicle condition or collection circumstances change, discuss that before the appointment.

Comparisons are most useful when they involve similar specification, kilometres and condition. A well maintained running vehicle, a car with a major fault and an incomplete vehicle are not interchangeable examples. Our car value guide explains how to prepare a useful assessment enquiry without relying on an unsupported universal payout figure.

Organise the documents before setting a date

Check that the records you need are available and that the seller details reflect the actual ownership situation. If you are helping a family member, acting for a business or dealing with vehicles at a property you manage, explain your role before arranging the transaction. Physical access to a vehicle does not establish authority to sell it.

Use the official checklist rather than borrowing a generic American “no title” process from another website. Avoid sending complete identification or registration images through an ordinary enquiry form. Start with the general vehicle details and discuss the appropriate verification process directly with the relevant business or professional.

If registration or ownership records are missing

Missing paperwork does not create an automatic exemption from the ownership process. ICBC has specific guidance for vehicles without documentation, and the next steps depend on the records available and the circumstances. Speak with an Autoplan broker before committing to a sale or collection. Do not assume that possession, a photograph of a car or a driver’s licence is enough.

Use ICBC’s missing document guidance to identify the appropriate route. Tell the buyer about the issue early so a collection appointment is not mistaken for confirmation that the paperwork has been resolved.

Finance, estates and another person’s vehicle

If finance remains outstanding, discuss the proposed sale with the lender and establish the required steps before agreeing to hand over the vehicle. Do not assume that a buyer’s collection automatically settles a loan or removes another party’s interest. Keep the finance question separate from the practical question of moving the car.

An estate, joint ownership or an arrangement involving someone else’s vehicle may require different documents or authority. Describe the circumstances to the appropriate broker or adviser. This page does not replace those checks or promise that our business accepts every ownership situation. Raise the issue before booking, not when the vehicle is about to leave.

Agree payment and collection arrangements clearly

Record the vehicle details, amount, payment method and the arrangements you have actually agreed. Ask questions about anything still conditional. If there is a remote assessment or inspection stage, clarify where it fits. A general statement such as “cash today” does not explain the exact sequence for your transaction.

Our business offers cash and Interac transfer, with the handover details discussed directly. Confirm payment timing and any bank limitations before the appointment. Read how our process works for the points to cover. Do not assume the contact hours mean collection is available immediately throughout that period.

09 / The details

Plan how the vehicle will be reached

Explain the location, keys and access before collection is arranged. For a Vancouver parkade, mention clearance and gates. For a driveway or shared lot, identify anything blocking the vehicle and whether the wheels roll. A running car that cannot be driven safely still needs to be described accurately.

You should not move an unsafe vehicle or obstruct shared access merely to make a sale enquiry. Discuss the current location first. If you are arranging several vehicles, create a separate inventory and use our multiple vehicle pickup guidance so the ownership and collection questions are clear for each vehicle.

Remove belongings and stored personal information

Check the cabin, boot, glovebox, door pockets and under the seats. Look for parking passes, garage remotes, personal paperwork and items connected with another property. If the vehicle has a storage area or tools you intend to keep, clarify what is included in the sale before handover.

Review paired phones, saved addresses and other personal information in the entertainment system using the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. Make a checklist you can complete before the appointment rather than trying to remember everything when the collection is underway. Keep only the items and records appropriate for your own transaction.

Plates and insurance need their own follow through

Follow ICBC’s plate and transfer instructions and confirm what should happen to your insurance. Do not assume that selling the vehicle automatically cancels the policy or that handing documents to a buyer completes every administrative step. Ask an Autoplan broker about the action suitable for your circumstances.

ICBC provides separate insurance cancellation guidance. Review that information when preparing the sale, especially if you are replacing the vehicle or need to discuss how existing insurance arrangements should be handled.

12 / The details

Keep a practical record of the sale

Keep the transaction details, relevant completed documents and payment information in a safe place. Record the vehicle involved and the agreed collection arrangements so you can distinguish this sale from other enquiries. If someone else assisted with access, keep the roles clear in your own notes.

After the appointment, follow through on anything still outstanding rather than assuming it has been handled by another party. If a question arises, a clear record makes it easier to explain the situation to the buyer, broker or lender. Avoid leaving sensitive personal records in the vehicle itself.

Questions before selling a car in BC

Can I begin a buyer enquiry before all my records are organised?

You can begin with general vehicle information and explain what is missing. Do not present a booked collection as proof that ownership requirements have been satisfied. Identify the issue early and check the appropriate official guidance before finalising the sale. Accurate information about the vehicle and seller’s circumstances helps avoid an unsuitable appointment.

Is a private asking price the same as a cash buying offer?

They are different kinds of information. An asking price shows what a seller wants, while an offer relates to a particular assessment and proposed transaction. Compare vehicle specification, condition, kilometres and arrangements rather than one number alone. Ask what remains to be checked and keep a record of the terms you actually accept.

Should I book collection before discussing access?

Describe access first. A parkade, locked gate, blocked vehicle or car that will not roll can change the planning needed. Tell the buyer what the situation is now rather than assuming a collection method. Confirm the actual appointment and who will provide keys or site access before relying on the schedule.

Can I use this guide for several vehicles?

The preparation principles are useful, but keep the information separate for each vehicle. Different owners, finance situations and document records may be involved. Prepare a list and explain those differences before collection is arranged. Our bulk enquiry page covers quantity and site planning, while the relevant broker or lender can address individual record or finance questions.
